DETVIANSKE LUDOVE UMENIE
DETVA'S
FOLK ART
Detva's Folk Art is a
small store right across the Roman Catholic Church in the old part of
Detva. The store was started over thirty years ago by Veronika Golianova,
grandmother my friend's wife, Iveta Smilekova. I met Iveta many years
ago after meeting her husband Pavel at the folk festival in Detva. Pavel
is I would say probably the best character folk dancer of Detva's dances
as when he dances you can feel the energy and happiness of his dancing.
Sadly he isn't performing regularly anymore with the Detva's folk
dance group Podpolanec at the festivals and I do miss him. Iveta used to
dance in Podpolanec too.
Veronika Golianova used
to lead a folk dance group Detvan. She was one of the founding members. In
1955 they danced in Prague. She was known all aver for her Embroidery wit
bent needle a Detva's specialty. Her daughter Vilma continued her art in
creating traditional Detva’s embroidery. The business lasted many years
and in 1993 Iveta, daughter of Vilma wanting to preserve the traditional
embroidery opened this location where she continues in the embroidery with
bent needle, creating traditional embroidery and also Detva's folk art.
She only caries genuine works of folk art, specializing in the Detva's
region and many folk artists are selling their work through her store.
If you are in Detva, make
sure you stop by, you will be pleasantly surprised by the reasonable
prices. You can also order in advance genuine complete folk dresses.
