THE BELLS
OF ST.
EGIDIUS, BARDEJOV
UPDATE
The second bell of the
Cathedral of St. Egidius in Bardejov, St. Urban was cast on June 19 at
3:20 P.M. in the bell foundry of Mrs. Maria Tomasikova-Dytrichova in
Brodek u Prerova in Moravia. St. Urban weights 4 metric tones. To cast the
bell they used 5 tones of copper and zinc, 77% of copper and 23% of zinc,
bit of salt and pepper. They said same as you add flavor to the food,
according to old bell casting
custom, you must flavor the bell. Bells are the sound
dominant of every locality in the old towns and villages in Slovakia.
There is a relation between the bells and people there from the birth
until death because the bell is somehow a guide of the human life. Person
should be able to recognize whether the bell is calling him to prayer,
announcing the time of the day, if it's crying about someone death or
ringing with happiness and in celebration of some one's important visit.
Both bells were placed
into their permanent place in the bell tower of the cathedral together
with electric and electronic operating system by the end of July.
On September 1, 1993 the day
of St. Egidius, the patron of the gothic cathedral and the town of
Bardejov, both bells were ringing for the first time.
