This book grew out of the
authors' desire to familiarize readers with the history of 27 settlements
in Slovakia and to inspire interest in the preservation of highly precious
and appealing historical and cultural monuments, whose beauty we may not
fully realize or perceive in everyday life. Some of these once-busy towns
now live peaceful lives of provincial seats, but they reflect values
hidden in monuments of ancient history. They justly deserve words of
admiration and recognition, for their works of art may rival the monuments
of perhaps better-known cities abroad.
Nonetheless, the value of
material basis of our cultural heritage was revealed and appreciated when
two historic centers-Banská Štiavnica and Spiš Castle and its
surroundings-were recorded by the UNESCO on the List of Monuments of World
Cultural and Natural Heritage.
The authors were
determined to compromise between an illustrated short history and
tourists' guide. Each entry, therefore, incorporates brief general
information (elevation above sea level, geographical latitude and
longitude, topography, population, accommodation and means of access),
followed by a short history and description of the town and the municipal
arms, and a selection of the finest examples of cultural monuments. Each
entry is concluded with a suggested sightseeing tour, complemented with
the town plan and a collection of the main points of interest in the
surroundings. The splendid works of architecture and unique works of art
are documented with period pictures and color photos.
