A big thank you goes to all subscribers that have renewed their
subscriptions so far, however there are still many non payers and it is
large $ volumes. If everybody would pay their unpaid subscriptions we
would have a total of US$15475.00, which is about the amount I am in the
minus for publishing Slovak Heritage Live Newsletter over the years. I
don’t get paid for anything and finance all the trips by myself, take
pictures and write most of the articles, finance the printing, Maria,
Mathew and I stuff the envelopes for free, I then take the mail to
Seattle by car, again for free and deliver it to Mail Movers Seattle, a
mail forwarding company, thus saving us thousands of dollars on postage
per year. I finance the mail as well. I do it, all in hopes that you the
subscribers get the message one day and send in your subscriptions and
pay for the years of receiving Slovak Heritage Live newsletter for free.
I can’t get anything done for free as far as the printing and mail is
concerned. I would appreciate any donations you may be able give, so I
may decrease the personal deficit I am in right now. Many thanks in
advance.
After a long thoughts I have decided to fly again with British Airways
to London and then to Vienna. There are however two negative issues, one
is that British Airways are starting their summer season earlier than
other major airlines and I have to then fly latest on June 2. Second
that in London I have to switch terminals. Positive it that their
service I great, there is short wait at Heathrow Airport and they are
the only airline still allowing two suitcases of 70 pounds each on trans
Atlantic flights until September of this year, when they will follow the
other airlines and allowing only 51 pounds per suitcase. BA was also
less expensive than Lufthansa for the same dates. While you reading this

Dear Vlad,
I received the fall 2006, winter 2006, and spring 2007 of Slovak
Heritage Live. I note also my subscription expires in May 2007. Please
renew for another year. Check is enclosed as is address label.
I read each issue cover to cover.
My brother and I will be visiting Slovakia May 9-16, 2007. We want to
visit the villages of origin of my four grandparents. All migrated here
between 1895-1908.
John S. Luca-Ľubotice (formerly Kelemeš) and Mary Gercak-Bartošovce.
Both in Šariš County.
John Stohla-Dylagowa, Galicia (presently Poland) but he went to Trebišov
as youngster and Anna Brindzok-Trebišov (Zemplin County).
I visited these places in 1982 but could obtain little information since
all church records were confiscated by Communist authorities. I
understand the records have been returned to the proper churches and
authorities.
I did locate a few cousins back in 1982. Perhaps I can meet more this
time and enjoy my trip more than in 1982. As a Catholic priest I had
been refused visas in 1959, 1961, 1971, and 1982. They finally issued me
a visa in 1982 after I visited the Czechoslovak Embassy in Washington.
But they insisted that I travel as a teacher, not as a priest.
Reluctantly I agreed. This time I can be myself and what I am.

known as Rajecká Lesná). I’ve visited Slovakia eleven times; I spent 3
Christmases/New Year’s in Rakecká Lesná with my Slovak first cousins. I
taught English in Púchov and stayed in Slovakia for 365 days on that
trip.

A DREAM BECOMES REALITY

In 1906 Anna Hric (Hritz) with her children
Ann, George, and Mary left Slovakia for the USA to join her husband
George. And now a hundred years later her grandson fulfilled a dream to
visit Slovakia, I am that grandson and I wanted to see Slovakia as well
as the towns where my mother Mary and her siblings were born. This
happened, it actually did, on Sept. 6, 2006 when I joined a tour group
organized by Prof. Rudolph Bachna of Kent, Ohio. Through his efforts,
Kent, Ohio, and Dudince, Slovakia, became sister cities. People residing
in other states joined his efforts. My cousin Mike Feeko of Port Crane,
NY and I also Joined that effort.
I had been under the impression that our mothers and Uncle George were
born in Čičava. Michael went to Slovakia in 2000 with a Kent group and
he visited (16ava with an interpreter and he discovered his mother and
our uncle were born in Ni~fiy Kru6ov a not too distant village. In
Čičava, Michael met the mayor, Maria Nehilová, and also a woman with the
name of Hric but was unsure of any relationship. On Mike’s return I
wrote a letter in Slovak to the mayor. She in turn passed the letter
around the village. And that’s where the matter remained.
So on September 6, Michael and I met our group at Newark airport. The
Czech plane (CSA) took off at 6:50pm. We flew over Maine, Newfoundland,
Iceland, Ireland, England, Germany, and finally landed in Prague
airport. The flight over was smooth, so smooth I thought the plane was
standing still in the sky. Actually we were up 33,000 feet and flying at
540 mph. The time difference was 6 hours. After a security check at the
Prague airport, we boarded another plane for a flight to Budapest,
Hungary, where we spent two days and nights. Budapest is a very
interesting city with beautiful monuments and history. The goulash soup
was delicious. We went, among other things, to a sidewalk sale of
souvenirs, jewelry and clothing...

SLOVAK SPARKLING WINE
Legend:
JOHANN EVANGELIST HUBERT
was a French soldier, injured in war with Napoleon Bonaparte in Russia.
During his return home he passed through Bratislava where he was
recuperating in the army hospital. He fell in love with nurse Pavlina
and he married her. Since he new the secret of producing champagne and
Bratislava’s wines were very well known, Johann Evangelist Hubert
established firm J. E. HUBERT in 1825. During that time it was
the first winery in Europe after France producing champagne according to
the original French recipe...
The true story is:
1825-1875 YEARS OF ESTABLISHMENT
Bratislava’s
noblemen JOHAN FISCHER and MICHAEL SCHÖNBAUER established
a wine producing company in 1825 in Bratislava. It became the cradle of
sparkling wine in Europe and the first town outside the French borders
where this wine was made. Johan Fischer was important Bratislava’s
nobleman Caesar’s and king’s house merchant with different products and
wine. He was involved in commission and special business. Medical Doctor
Schönbauer worked as a surgeon in city’s army hospital and both men were
members of the city outside committee. The capital for establishment of
their winery was provided by Fischer and the technical side was operated
by Schönbauer. This information could let us to assume that the secret
of producing champagne could have be known by him, but it isn’t known
when and where he learned it...
PALUGYAY SPARKLING WINES
Great success
in business with wine in the second half of the 19th century achieved
JACOB PALUGYAY (August 8, 1819-May 22, 1886) from 1844 owner of
Bratislava’s pub at Železná Studnička-Iron Spring, where the
representatives of Hungarian House of representatives used to gather.
Later on, he also owned a pub called BY THE GREEN TREE which he
rebuilt to a hotel in 1849 and it is today’s CARLTON HOTEL. In
1863 he established a family business of wholesaling wine that had an
important position in Austro-Hungarian monarchy and started to produce
his famous sparkling wine...
THE STORY OF LUKÁŠ CABALKA-FOLKLORIST,
DANCER, CHOREOGRAPHER
I have met Lukáš Cabalka first
time in fall of 2002. He was already working hard as a choreographer for
folklore group JÁNOŠÍK in Svit, while finishing his studies at the
University in Bratislava and dancing for the best Slovak amateur
folklore ensemble LÚCNICA. His mission in JÁNOŠÍK was to
create choreographies for their 50th anniversary gala program that was
held on November 17 and 18, 2006.
Year ago a professional folklore group VINOK WORLD DANCE from
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was looking for a skilled choreographer and
director. At that time Lukáš Cabalka couldn’t imagine that as afresh
absolvent of dance creation at the University of Music Arts in
Bratislava he would be traveling the world this way.
He found out about the position through the internet and quickly
submitted his resume with an application. He sent directors his plans
and visions, experiences and everything, he went through at home. He was
selected together with two other top world choreographers. It wasn’t an
easy task as the whole process took over a year to accomplish. The
directors of Vinok were constantly asking for ideas, scripts, and then
he went in May of last year for a personal interview in Edmonton where
they checked his knowledge and signed a two year contract with him.
So far Lukáš created over forty choreographies at home and abroad, he is
also involved in directing of international festivals of art in Dubai
and Oman.
He arrived in Edmonton on November 21, 2006 with two associates, Slovak
folk dancers, and three days after Janošík’s gala performance which was
a great success.
VINOK WORLD DANCE
is the only professional folkdance group in Canada
that is dedicated to folklore from around the world.
He will have to produce and
teach the dancers five choreographies and do workshops in high schools.
During his two weeks stay in Edmonton last year he noticed that the
dancers not only had lots of knowledge about Slovak folk customs,
language, traditions but they also wanted to learn professionally Slovak
dances. VINOK WORLD DANCE is performing across Canada and United
States and currently they are booked until the end of 2008. There is a
great interest in the new program he is helping to create as well. Lukáš
is very proud that they started to make folk costumes from several
regions of Slovakia already.
He would like to present his experiences from Canada to Slovak viewers
in the style of world dance upon his return.
Lukáš is very happy that he was recognized by VINOK and looking forward
to great choreographies and performances in North America.
I have phoned Lukaš over the holidays and found that he is very happy in
Edmonton and getting used to different life, finding new friends and
enjoying his new life here. In the short time that he is here, he had
already offers to produce choreographies in Los Angeles, New York and
Windsor, had radio interview and a story published in local paper.

LET’S HELP MAGDALENA’S DREAM COME THROUGH
Allow me to introduce myself. My
name is Magdaléna Tunegová, I am seventeen years old. I live in
Bratislava where I attend second year of Catholic High school. Since
beginning of my elementary school at age six I am involved with music.
At that age I was accepted to a girls choir CANENS and as a
little child I started to train in secrets of choir singing. Today I am
in the choir eleventh year. During this time with the choir I had many
pleasant experiences. I found girl friends with same interest for music
as mine; I got to known a lot of great singers and musicians with whom
our choir was performing, I participated in many beautiful concert
performances. Through the singing in the CANENS choir I had lots
of opportunities to visit many European countries and learn about
different cultures and I believe this otherwise would be impossible for
me.
Now I
would like to officially introduce our choir...
DAX CAFÉ -
RESTAURANT
DAX Café Restaurant opened in 2005. It is
located almost in the center of town, close to the Government building,
close to the business districts as well and close to the Freedom Square.
Since then it has grown to a very popular restaurant especially with the
lunch crowd. It offers wide range of international meals enriched with
Slovak specialties. They offer trade mark coffee and homemade cakes and
pastries. Capacity of the restaurant is 60 guests. During the week they
offer two types of fixed price full lunch menus and one vegetarian fix
price full menu. They also have continuously changing art exhibits.
During the summer months they offer outside sidewalk seating as well.
The décor is modern and very pleasant, the staff is friendly and the
service is fast and excellent. Café DAX is also helping young artist to
get recognized by having continuous art exhibits on its walls. The owner
is my friend Igor Halanda who has been in the restaurant trade since
about 1969 and he also works in Vienna’s famous Figlmüller restaurant.

DICTIONARY OF THE CONTEMPORARY SLOVAK LANGUAGE A - G

The first volume out of eight volumes of the Dictionary of the
Contemporary Slovak Language contains approximately
40 000 entries (letters A-G). The last part of the dictionary presents
the list of names of municipalities in Slovakia. The complete dictionary
should be available within a short period of time.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SLOVAKIA AND THE SLOVAKS
A Concise Encyclopedia
Encyclopedic Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava
2006
760 pages, 20 maps, 3,640 entries about Slovakia, its history,
personalities, culture, political and economic development to feature a
country spread between Danube and Carpathians.
I can only recommend both new books to those who are interested in the
Slovak language and Slovakia.

EXCURSION OF FOREIGN
STUDENTS THROUGH SLOVAKIA

Excursion took place during April 19-22, 2007.
The Institute of Language
and Academic Preparation for Foreign Students is one of the institutions
of Comenius University in Bratislava. Foreign students from all corners
of the world come to us to learn Slovak language since 1961. Some of
them are on the scholarship from the Slovak Government and others are
self payers. Both groups of students study together and have the same
curriculum. The excursion was possible also thanks to positive approach
of the directorship of the Centre of Continuing Education of Comenius
University because they financially secured the bus and accommodation.
The students paid for the admissions to the castles, museums, caves and
food during the duration of the trip.
Every end
of the school year we prepare 4 day knowledge trip through Slovakia. It
is like school in nature. Immediately upon arrival to the bus, the
students receive a package that includes: map of Slovakia, note pad,
itinerary of the excursion, song sheets of Slovak folk and other popular
songs. Students were accompanied by three teachers, who explain to the
students
during the whole trip
where they are or which area they are passing. Students make notes,
often they have many questions, and everything interests them, because
during the excursion they are through their own eyes getting to know
historical monuments that they have seen up to now only on photographs
or movies.
This year we started
our excursion non traditionally and we followed the so called VINE ROAD
from Bratislava through Pezinok, Modra, Trstín, Brezová pod Bradlom to
Košariská a birthplace of our greatest countryman, respected politician,
general, astronomer, traveler, MILAN RASTISLAV ŠTEFÁNIK, We visited
Štefánik’s museum, located in his birth house. Parts of the exhibit are
his different personal belongings, family photographs and also his
godfather M. Hurban who was co worker of Ľudovít Štúr. Students were
very interested in the lecture of the museum lecturer who explained
Štefánik’s travels throughout the whole world. He brought a memento from
each journey, several very interesting tiny pieces, that are neatly
arranged throughout the whole house-museum. Life of M. R. Štefánik was
very interesting, rich, but short. After the museum visit we went
directly to BRADLO MOUNT and the monument of M. R. Štefánik, his resting
place. Author of this architecturally attractive monument is well known
and important Slovak architect Mr. Jurkovič. The view from the monument,
amazing nature of Low Carpathian Mountains, blooming cherry threes, that
was a view like from fairy tale...
REPRISALS OF THE NAZIS AND
PHOG (EMERGENCY UNITS OF HLINKA’S GUARD)
MEMBERS IN SLOVAKIA IN YEARS 1944-1945
On March 1939 the establishment
of the Slovak State was declared in which gradually authoritarian regime
with political and racist persecution prevailed. The constitution of the
Slovak Republic acknowledged on July 21, 1939 was of a class right
character with the elements close to the authoritarian systems of
Fascist Italy and Franco’s Spain. It’s economic and foreign policy began
to be step by step subordinated to the interests of Nazi Germany. The
leading part of the Hlinka Slovak Popular Party (HSĽS) was rooted in the
legal system of the Slovak Republic.
Side by side with Nazi Germany the Slovak Republic waged war against
Poland on September 1, 1939, against the USSR on June 22, 1941 and in
December 1941 declared war to the USA and Great Britain.
Though in the years 1943-1944 the regime of the Slovak Republic declined
into stagnation and profound internal crisis in consequence of
Antifascist Coalition’s military success, security units intensified
their reprisals against the opponents of the HSĽS regime. In the period
1939-1945 the Nazis deported from Slovakia to concentration camps over
80000 people of which more then 70000 died in the death camps just from
racial reasons and for various forms of resistance activity...

LANDMARK
MEMORIAL NEMECKÁ
The first written document
related to the village is from the year 1281.
The majority of the inhabitants of Nemecká were farmers, forest workers,
and people working in The State refinery in Dubová, or in the local lime
kiln and brick kiln. The main occupations of the citizens were
door-to-door selling of laces, developed from the 18. century to these
days.
The Nazis carried out the first murder in Nemecká as early as December
3, 1944. At a farm house Halgaš, they arrested Helena Schwartzová and
her 5 month old son Milan, Helena Jakelová, Alžbeta Gelbová and three
unknown persons in November 1944. After a short imprisonment they
murdered them, threw them into a bomb crater and buried them.
Nemecká became a substantial part of the Slovak history in January 1945,
when lime kiln between villages Ráztoka and Nemecká was “the dumb
witness” of the tragic events...

This is the 17th year of festival of young
folklorists with many innovative ideas. Small, but great. The villagers
open their house courtyards and people sing and dance in them all night

This is a regional festival of the Hont
region. Meeting with the
traditional culture in the frame of agro tourism. Folklore programs are
a part of sampling or the traditional ways activities such as bread
baking, wood working, sampling of pear brandy, working with hay,
traditional cooking, open folk scene, horseback riding and many more.
