Orava's castle

FROM THE EDITOR
I have been to Slovakia twice this year and you can read about my trips in my travelogue on following pages. Soon the summer will be here and I am sure many of you will travel to Slovakia. Remember the gas is over 33.00 SK per liter, which is roughly about 70 cents depending on the exchange rate. Prices for most groceries are about the same as in USA or in Canada. Relative still inexpensive for North American visitors and real bargain against other countries of Western Europe. Food in restaurants is still a bargain, but be careful, they charge extra for everything. Prices posted for the main course meal are prices for the meat, and then there are extras for vegetable garnish, rice, potatoes, fries and even extras for the ketchup, tartar sauce, mayonnaise, etc....

MY SPRING 2001 TRIP TO SLOVAKIA
My spring 2001 Slovakia trip started on March 10. This time I was able to list for a flight through a family member that works for Air Canada as a stand by for CAD$150.00 a deal too good to pass. Well here it is how it went:

When you fly as a partner, you can’t plan too far ahead. As it was getting closer to my tentative departure I found out that all flights are extremely overbooked due to the seat sale. I wanted to fly through Calgary to Frankfurt and I was told that I might have better chance by flying through Toronto. I booked a car in Frankfurt, which is non-refundable. My flight was to leave at 8:30 AM. There was an all Canada, Air Canada computer melt down and this resulted in colossal mix-ups and delays. First flight was delayed and filled to the last chair and I stayed behind. Second flight was leaving two hours later and I was taken to the plane’s doors to see if there would be a seat left for me. Well there wasn’t. So I waited for the third plane due to depart 11:30. Of course by these delays even if I got on the next plane I would have missed the flight to Frankfurt and God only knows if and when I get there. As I had plenty of time now, I started to think about the air travel...

HOG KILLING IN LIPTOVSKA TEPLICKA
By: Marcela Smolarova
Hog killing in Liptovska Teplicka is an age long tradition that takes place usually in winter before Christmas or early spring before Easter. Most of the families in Liptovska Teplicka bread at least two pigs. This is due to the fact that until recently there were no fridges or freezers and it was very difficult to store the meat due to the heat and the flying insects.
Hog-killing usually takes place early Saturday morning with help of several family members. Some members of the family are able to kill the pig and process the meat by themselves. The ones that can’t do this call the butcher or someone more skilful from the family.
The whole process starts with boiling water in a cauldron. When the hot water that is needed for the meat processing is boiling the hog killing may proceed. After the kill that is performed by a special gun the pig is let to bleed and the blood is captured to a bowl to be used later to make blood sausage. After the bleeding the pig is put into a wooden manger and boiling water is poured over it...

Detva's embroider, organizer of folk art manufacturing and folklore movement, collector.

She grew in very modest relations, but she got from her family value for beauty, aesthetics, and endurance, with which she was able to found and create beauty. Her mother used to do embroidery and weaving, but her father’s cousin, aunt Majdakova, introduced the real mystery of Detva's embroidery to her. As nine-year-old girl she first embroiled a towel. For her first shoulder sleeve her mother had to sell a geese so she could buy for her the material for the embroidery called sifon...

ORAVA'S CASTLE
Orava belongs to one of the most typical natural and historical regions of Slovakia. Its territory was inhabited as early as in Primeval Age. A few solitary findings originate from Late Stone Age and from the Early Bronze Age. More extensive inhabitation of the region goes back to the Late Bronze Age. In this era, in place of the today’s Middle and Lower Castles an elevated settlement was founded. Its inhabitant’s-the people of “Lusitian urn fields”-(1100-400) fortified it with walls of wood and earth.
In younger Hallstatt era the elevated castle cliff belonged to the important Hallstatt settlements, and in the era of fortified homesteads the place was inhabited by Slavonic people...
